The Miracle in Medinah

All comments()

This year’s Ryder Cup was held at Medinah Country Club, Illinois, with Europe looking to retain the trophy they claimed 2 years earlier.

The first day of the 3-day tournament saw the USA display their dominance with a 5-point to 3 lead in the doubles match. The second day had the USA leading 10-6, with fantastic golfing by the doubles pair of Mickleson and Bradley for the USA.

It would require a gargantuan effort by team Europe to overturn the odds and keep a hold of the cup.

The Captain of team Europe, Jose Maria Olazabal, preached of 'summoning the spirit of Seve', stemming from the passing of the Spanish golfing legend last year.

The final day of singles saw Europe lighting the board blue, on course for a historic and unthinkable comeback. One of the notable performances of the day was courtesy of Rory Mcilroy- confusion over his tee time led to him being police escorted to the golf club, without any prior preparation.

Europeans, Donald, Poulter, Mcilroy all bought points back, while an impressive 5 and 3 win for Scotsman Paul Lawrie hushed the boisterous American crowd.

After some hapless shots by team USA, German Martin Kaymer eventually sunk the all-important putt to retain the Ryder Cup. Europe won, gaining them a historic 14½ to 13½ victory.
