A Summer for Singing!

All comments()

For those of you, who like to start the day by belting out your favourite ballad whilst in the shower, carry on! New Research suggests that singing can have a variety of health benefits from relieving anxiety to lowering blood pressure. The reasoning behind this theory is that controlled breathing, be it in yoga or as part of harmonising in a choir, slows down the heart. Researchers in Sweden monitored the heart rates of singers as they performed a variety of choral works and discovered that choir singers not only harmonise their voices, they also synchronise their heartbeats! If you are feeling stressed from work or having trouble sleeping at night, group singing may be the simple and easy solution to your problems! The potential to use song as an alternative therapy for a number of illnesses has not gone unnoticed. There have been calls for local authorities to provide more options for community singing "especially from midlife onwards" because there is so much evidence it keeps people healthier. Sing For Joy is a charity that provides a choir service for people with Parkinson’s and Nike have even been discussing the possibility of a new Sing n Sweat app! Getting healthy has never been so much fun so download your favourite playlist and start singing your way to good health this summer!
