All comments()

Guo Xiaoran has been an established bridal dress designer for 3 years and has a Beijing based boutique called Hello Mirror in Chaoyang District. Her beautiful craftsmanship helps make dreams come true for many women. She emphasizes the importance of detail and her dresses are characterized by delicate lace and intricate beading. Her motivation originates in her belief that every women dreams of the one day when she can feel like a princess and marry her very own prince charming. Her main aim is to deliver a product that is both high quality and, most importantly, makes the bride feel beautiful on her special day. Her boutique of high end bridal wear represents a wider transition in China and the growing buying capacity of Chinese women who are becoming increasingly articulate about what they want. Before it was the norm to rent a bridal dress but now people are increasingly opting for custom made luxury dresses. Luxurious is definitely the word to describe her products. From the skilled craftsmanship and imported fabrics to the Italian Swarovski crystals and handmade embroidery, she uses only the most extravagant methods and materials to create her beautiful creations. MetroStyle met with the talented designer to find out more about her life, work and future plans.

What motivated you to design bridal wear?
It is a job that involves beauty and happiness.

Did you study fashion or design at college/university/professionally?
Yes, I specialised in costume design.

Tell us about Hello Mirror, what inspired the name, and when did the business begin? Are things going well? What kind of bride are you targeting?
Hello Mirror is a name full of fantasy. I didn’t want to give it a definition with a very concrete meaning because I believe every woman has their own fantasy and idea of what constitutes beauty.

How do you feel the environment of the store effects a bride when finding her dress?
I feel that above all feeling comfortable and free is the most important thing. The environment doesn’t necessarily have to be luxuriant and dazzlingly beautiful! I prefer that the customer feels relaxed and without pressure when deciding on a purchase.

Can brides request specific designs?
Yes they can, this is part of our “luxury custom made” service. It is several times more expensive.

Do you offer anything else besides bridal gowns?
We also offer evening gowns which are also very popular.

What are your inspirations behind your designs?
My inspirations originate from many places: perhaps a film or a place or even a kind of feeling…

How and when did you start out in bridal design, and before then, were you always a bridal dress designer?
I’ve been in the bridal industry for 5, 6 years but I started properly designing about 3 years ago.

What are your plans for the remainder of 2013, and for the future?
My plans for the future may involve two aspects: I plan on expanding my range of luxury products whilst at the same time enabling many more people to experience and own high quality wedding dresses and evening dresses.

Would you wear your own design for your wedding, and what sort of dress?
If I could only wear one, I would wear a very simple wedding dress and I would definitely design it myself.

Was there a defining point in your career that set you on the path of success?
My own definition of “success” is doing a job that makes me happy, so in that respect I am very successful. Of course, at every stage of my work I must set myself some objectives! Only when you are constantly pushing yourself to do better can you really make it in this wonderful but competitive industry.

Have you ever thought about designing unconventional (not white) bridal dresses?
Yes, before we had a range of wedding dresses in colours other than white. For example, champagne and silvery grey…

What accessories do you prefer on a bride?
Every accessory and piece of material must without a doubt complement each other. This includes everything from one single exquisite silk thread to one minute and delicate little pearl. They are all part of the same beautiful dress and are an indispensable part. Only when they are all perfectly combined together can the dress be beautiful in its entirety. Presently I am working more with lace material and pearls.

Do you have a personal favorite style of bridal gown, and if so why?
I don’t have a “favourite”, only ones I “really like,” I deeply believe every new style has the potential to be “even more beautiful than the last!”

Tell us a little about yourself, what do you do when you’re not designing?
Unless I am forced, I never stop working. However, if I had more time I would like to study traditional Chinese painting.

Have you ever thought about designing non-bridal fashion lines for women?
Yes! For example I have my own thoughts and opinions on the Chinese Qipao but presently I would rather concentrate on bridal dresses and evening gowns.

What’s been your favorite moment of your Hello Mirror experience?
When old customers recommend me and my dresses to their loved ones and friends I feel incredibly proud and happy that they put their trust in me. This is one of the things that most motivates me to keep striving to make something even better.
